Teddy Bear Project

Eddie

Mrs. Byrne’s class of Junior Infants have sent their friend Eddie to Australia.
Eddie is our teddy bear and we sent him to Australia on his holidays. We found some information on the internet and saw that the weather there is sunny and much warmer than here. We decided that Eddie would need summery clothes so Mrs. Byrne went shopping and bought Eddie some clothes for his holiday- we have sent him off with some shorts and t-shirts, sunglasses, a sunhat and a swimsuit. We also sent off some photographs of our class and our school. Eddie has arrived safely with our friends in Swan Reach School in Eastern Victoria.

Here are some photographs of our school and Eddie before he set off on his travels.

Ranger Roo

Our friends in Swan Reach have sent us a teddy called Ranger Roo. We are getting a little bit worried at the moment as Ranger Roo hasn’t arrived in Ireland yet!

Here is Ranger Roo in Australia before he left!

The Adventures

Our plan is that each night one of us will bring Ranger Roo home. At school the next day we will send an e-mail to our friends in Australia and tell them what Ranger Roo is getting up to in Ireland. The children in Australia will learn about what life is like here in Ireland.
Eddie has already been home with one of the children out in Australia and we got this account back from Ms Blennerhassett and her class –
We are worried that we didn’t send any warm clothes with Roo
. We didn’t think you would still be getting snow.
We are into Autumn and every day is different from a hot 28 on Friday to a cold and wet Monday of 18.

We are all getting colds.
Eddie went home with Tyler . He made a special bed for him and took him to the swimming pool to watch Tyler having his lesson.
Tyler ’s Gran was down from Bega in New South Wales and loved meeting Eddie from Arklow.

Questions

Ms Blennerhassett and her class had some questions for us about our school and life in Ireland. We answered their questions and thought of some questions of our own. Here are the questions we got from Australia –

George – Do your children do plus and take away sums

Joe- Do your children have freckles?

Jayde – Do you have a cat?

Michael – Do you have a dog? What kinds?

Reece- Do you have ponds near school?

James – Do any of the class have horses?

Ashleigh- Do the chn have chickens?

Jack – Do your students have cows?

Casey – What do your houses look like?

Mya – Do any of you have sheep?

Hannah – How do the chn. come to school?

Leah - What do you eat for breakfast?

Samantha – What are the students doing for their holidays? Do they go away to another country?

Tyler - Do you have names like ours?
Ranger Roo

Hopefully Ranger Roo will arrive in Arklow over the next few days…..we’ll keep you posted!

Ranger Roo
Ranger Roo arrived in St. Joseph’s on Tuesday, 22nd April to a very excited class of Junior Infants. Here are some photographs of us with Roo following his arrival in Ireland.

Ranger Roo’s Diary

Ross was the first person to bring Ranger Roo home for a night.
Ross' mammy sent in this diary of what Ranger Roo did with his friend Ross.

The children from Ms Byrne's class looked so excited when they came out to meet their parents at 2 o'clock after school. Ranger Roo had arrived from Australia. At last, safe and sound!
Ross was asked to take care of him for the first night. Ranger Roo must have been exhausted after his long journey but he went to the play park with Ross and Oisín and had fun on the slide and the seat that spins around and around.
After dinner in the evening it was time to take Roo for a walk, to show him around the area. It was getting a bit cloudy and dull so Ross wore a warm coat. Ranger Roo had his Ranger shirt and hat on.
First Ranger Roo saw the beach and the sea. There was a rowing boat out. The crew were practising for the Celtic Challenge rowing race.
Then around by the marina to take a look at the sailing boats. Ranger Roo and Ross went out onto one of the boats with Ross' Dad. They were very careful. When they were walking home a big, big cloud came over and it started to rain really heavily. Ross was afraid that Ranger Roo would get wet to he opened his coat and put Roo inside and zipped it back up. It continued to rain so Ross' Mam rang her sister to pick them up and give them a lift home.
Ross and Roo were tired.
Roo slept in a little bed with a red pillow and a blue blanket. He slept all night until Ross woke him in the morning.
It was time to take him back to school so that another boy or girl can have a lovely day taking care of Ranger Roo.
Ranger Roo is the luckiest kangaroo in the world to have such lovely friends.

Dear class,
Ranger Roo would like to thank Eric for a lovely stay in his house. I watched Eric swimming at his swimming lessons - he was very good. We also went to the park. I helped Eric with his homework then. I really liked Eric's bunkbeds. Eric doesn't get up until 8.30 a.m. and has his breakfast, gets washed and dressed and out the door for 9.10a.m. Off to school now and we're getting a ride with Eric's dad in his van. Talk to you soon.
Ranger Roo.

Ranger Roo on his travels with Aimee.
I was so excited when it was my turn to take Roo home on Friday. It was raining so I put him under my coat so he would not get wet. I took him to see all the shops at the shopping centre. I showed him the toys in TK Maxx and he had a great time but was very tired when we got home. He slept in Baby Born's car seat and slept all night long.
Saturday - We got up early, had breakfast and brought him recycling. We showed him where we put the cardboard, papers, bottles and tins and he had great fun helping me and my dad. Then we went to the library and showed him all the lovely books there. We met my friends Emma and Rebecca there and they both loved Roo! In the afternoon we played games - he loved monkey mischief. We had some tea, watched 'Pet Rescue' and went to bed tired but happy.
Sunday - It was my last day to have Roo so I wanted to do something really special. I asked my dad if we could take Roo swimming. He said yes! Roo watched me and my dad having great fun in the pool. In the afternoon we went to the toy shop to pick a birthday present for my brother Dylan. Roo kept laughing while he watched me learning to skip. I read him a story before bed. I hope Ranger Roo enjoyed his adventures with me - I know I did.

Ranger Roo’s afternoon with Jorja
It was a bright and sunny day. Ranger Roo and Jorja walked hand in hand to the playground. A few children played happily on the swings but, noticing that her favourite slide was free, Jorja and Ranger Roo rushed over to it. They slid down the tunnel slide again and again, laughing as they went.
Soon they were tired and as clouds appeared overhead they decided to make their way home. When they got there their dinner was waiting and they both agreed it had been a wonderful afternoon!

Ranger Roo and Leah
Ranger Roo was picked up from school and strapped into the car. He was brought up to Nanny and Pops for a visit. After this Leah brought him to McDonalds for a Happy Meal. He really liked the strawberry milkshake. He was then brought to Leah’s home where he played in the garden with Leah and her sister Jodie. It started to rain so Leah’s Mum got them an umbrella. Leah put him under her jacket until the umbrella was ready. Ranger Roo then watched Leah and Jodie play with bubbles. Afterwards he was shown the fish in the aquarium and he really liked the yellow one. He watched Leah get ready for bed and then help her play on the Nintendo Wii with her Dad.
Ranger Roo was then put to bed in a bed Leah made for him. This had a pink pillow and a purple and white blanket. In the morning Leah got him dressed and he watched her get ready for school. He was then strapped back into the car and brought back to school.

Ranger Roo and Katie
Katie brought Ranger Roo to Tesco (a supermarket) yesterday. In Tesco we met Mrs. Byrne’s Mam and she was looking at Ranger Roo.
Then Katie brought Ranger Roo to her Granny’s house where they played in the back garden.
At home Katie and Ranger Roo had their dinner. They played then for a while and then got ready for bed.
Ranger Roo slept in a small box with a purple pillow and yellow blanket beside Katie’s bed.
This morning they got up, got dressed and had their breakfast and then went to school.

Ranger Roo with Oisín
Oisín wrote his own story of Ranger Roo’s trip to his house – He came to my house. We brought him swimming. He loved our climbing frame. Mum took photos.
Oisín.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ranger Roo came home with Oisín yesterday and there was great excitement.
He spent a long time outside playing with Oisín and Ronan, and their friend Katie Davis, and Ranger Roo was so brave on the climbing frame he even climbed to the top and swung on the monkey bars with Oisín!
We then went swimming, and Mum put him sitting on a towel, where he could watch Oisín diving under the water and jumping in. We locked him in the locker while we were showering because we were afraid he’d jump away on us! Gran came to visit to see him too!
This morning Ranger Roo ate some of our dog’s breakfast!! I don’t think they were very happy!
Off we go now walking to school so that Ranger Roo can have fresh air before being in class for the day!

Ranger Roo and Scott

Today I brought Ranger Roo home. When we got home we did our homework. After homework I made up his bed and then we had dinner. When we were finished Ranger Roo and I went to Tae Kwon Do, where we had lots of fun. Ranger Roo was very good. I loved having Ranger Roo in my house. I hope Ranger Roo has a great holiday.

Darren’s diary of his visit from Ranger Roo

Hi boys and girls,
My name is Darren Riley and I am almost six years of age. I have taken Ranger Roo to come and stay at my house for one night. I live in the countryside but am not a farmer. On my way home I put Ranger Roo into Bobby’s car seat and strapped him in so he would not fall out. I am so excited to have Ranger Roo to stay. Behind my house there is a field with a lot of cows in it. Ranger Roo got so excited because he said it reminded him of home in Australia. I have an older brother called Bobby and we all played together on the swings and rock-a-boat. We went so high we nearly fell off and hurt ourselves. Later on my Mammy had to go to Tesco to get some shopping. We were so tired we wanted to stay in the car. When we got home we played while Mammy cooked the dinner. We all ate up all our dinner, Ranger Roo included. Then we got some ice-cream. When dinner was over it was time for homework – Ranger Roo thought I was a good little reader. I have a remote control lorry so Ranger Roo had a great time going on it. We were so tired after all that playing that we wanted to go to bed. We brushed our teeth and said our prayers and we went to sleep after a great day.

Ranger Roo and Emma

We had a party for Ranger Roo. We had a chocolate caterpillar cake and sweets. I brought him on my swings and on my trampoline. Roo loved bouncing on the trampoline! We made him a nice bed in my room. It was fun. I showed him to all my friends.
Emma.

Ranger Roo and Caoimhe

I brought Ranger Roo home with me last night. I brought him out to play on my trampoline. He is very good at bouncing. We watched tv. We watched a cartoon called Lazytown. We had our supper then and we went to bed.

Katie and Ranger Roo

When Ranger Roo came home from school with Katie he watched some television with her in the sitting room. Then he sat up on the kitchen table and watched us all eating our dinner. Rachel, Katie, Aoife and Sophie (Katie's sisters) all had a turn holding him. He slept in the kitchen.

When Katie was a little baby she was in Australia. Her aunt lives in Australia but Katie was too young to remember her visit.

Dear Kids,

My name is Adam Walker and I am 4 years old. I had to take care of Ranger Roo on Wednesday 21st May. I was really looking forward to having Roo.
When I got out of school my Grandad was waiting for me and I showed him Ranger Roo and told him all about Eddie and Ranger Roo’s big adventure. Grandad was really pleased to meet Ranger Roo.

I took Ranger Roo and showed him all around the house. Then when my Mum came home from work she took photos of myself and my brothers with Ranger Roo. When my Grandad was going to pick my Nanny up from work we took Roo with us to show him Nanny’s workplace. Nanny took photos out in Ballyraine of me and my brother T.J. with Roo. We all had great fun.

When we got home my older brother Luke took us out to play in the garden. I bounced with Ranger Roo on my trampoline and showed Ranger Roo my sandpit.

My Mum helped me make a nice warm bed for Ranger Roo and as we both had a great fun day we both fell fast asleep. I really liked having Ranger Roo for the day.

Adam Walker.

Ranger Roo and David

I was playing with Ranger Roo yesterday. We ate dinner together and then we were watching television. When I went to get a bath Ranger Roo waited for me in my bedroom. After the bath me and Ranger Roo went to sleep.

Ranger Roo and T.J.

My name is T.J. Walker and I am the twin brother of Adam. We are both 4½ years old and in the same class.

I got to take Ranger Roo home on Friday, 23rd May. I was so excited to have him for the whole weekend.

On Saturday it was my big brother’s Confirmation and we were having a big party in the house and all my family were going to be there. I showed Ranger Roo to everybody and told them all about Eddie. They were really happy to meet him.

On Sunday Ranger Roo was too tired to come to my cousin Reece’s Communion so he stayed in his bed for the afternoon to recharge his batteries for the week of adventures he has ahead of him.

From T.J.

Ranger Roo and Margaret

Today was a great day and I am so happy because I took Ranger Roo home. First we went to Bridgewater shopping centre and then we went to Gorey.

When we came home Ranger Roo went on my ponies and he played football with me. We took lots of pictures of him with myself and my family. We wwatched a show all about toads, who are also from Australia. I will miss Ranger Roo when he goes home.

Margaret

Margaret sent in a little raincoat for Ranger Roo because the weather forecast for our tour was not good! Look at the photographs of Ranger Roo in his lovely new raincoat!

Ranger Roo on tour!

Yesterday the four classes of Junior Infants went on our school tour to Kia-Ora farm. We went on two big buses and of course our class brought our friend Ranger Roo with us.

The weather forecast was very bad so luckily Margaret had brought in a hood for Ranger Roo. We all wore our raincoats and lots of people wore their wellies.

When we got to the farm we had a little snack before we got down to the serious business of exploring the farm. We all took it in turns to show Ranger Roo around the farm. Ross looked after Ranger Roo on the bus and when we started looking around the farm Aimee showed him some of the animals, including the birds and the cows.

Dillon brought him to the sand pit where they did a bit of digging. Scott gave Roo a ride on one of the tractors. Adam brought Roo to join in a game of football. T.J. showed Roo the big old tractors that are on the farm and brought him down to the pond area where they saw geese and ducks. Leah showed Ranger Roo some more animals – they saw goats and even some baby rabbits.

Then Jorja showed him the big black pig. Emma showed Roo the peacock and they even got to see the peacock spreading out his wings – Roo thought that was beautiful! When it was time to come back to school we were all exhausted – some people even fell asleep on the bus home!

Back at school we washed our hands and had some more lunch – we were very hungry after all those adventures. Ranger Roo didn’t go home with any of the children last night though – after his busy day on the farm he went home with Mrs Byrne for a bath. Poor Ranger Roo was so exhausted after his school tour and his bath that he had to stay at home for a little rest today. We don’t want him to be worn out for the long journey back to Australia!
